In just two decades of existence, Los Angeles Opera has become, under the leadership of Eli and Edythe Broad General Director Plácido Domingo, the United States' fourth largest opera company and now "...stands out as a newly important force in American Opera." The 2007-2008 Season features a total of 71 performances with ten operas, a concert performance of the Verdi Requiem and a recital by bass-baritone Bryn Terfel, with five productions conducted by Music Director James Conlon. The Season includes Beethoven’s Fidelio starring Anja Kampe and Klaus Florian Vogt; the Company premiere of Janáček’s Jenůfa starring Karita Mattila and Eva Urbanova; a revival of Mozart’s Don Giovanni starring Erwin Schrott; a revival of Puccini’s La Bohème featuring an exciting cast of young artists including fast-rising soprano Maija Kovalevska; a revival of the Company’s landmark production of Tristan und Isolde designed by David Hockney and featuring Linda Watson and John Treleaven; Verdi’s Otello starring Ian Storey; the first fully-staged productions of the Company’s groundbreaking Recovered Voices project, a double bill of Zemlinsky’s The Dwarf (Company premiere) with Ullmann’s The Broken Jug (U.S. premiere); and two acclaimed Puccini revivals, Tosca starring Adrianne Pieczonka and Georgina Lukács with Neil Shicoff, and La Rondine starring Patricia Racette.
